Hua Wei is a quiet and dedicated student, who can paint for six or seven hours before taking a break. Her one disadvantage was not being good at socializing. At CURIO, teachers take their work seriously, but this does not prevent them from being friends with our students. With the help of our mentor CURIO was able to bring Hua Wei out of her shell and teach her how to best communicate with others. Once Hua Wei became more social CURIO’s next task was to help her discover: What kind of person she is and what does she want to become?
With her increased confidence, Hua Wei became interested in various extracurricular activities. After school, Hua Wei formed a Student Group to plan and manage student activities. Her job included organizing promotions, internal communications, arranging the work for her team members, and ensuring the smooth operation of the organization. Running this organization greatly enhanced Hua’s management, communication, and leadership abilities.
Hua helped her classmates experience everything from Christmas markets to School dances. Working with the Student Union she enriched her school’s student life. Her school only has 100 students and 82 of them are members of Hua’s Student Group. “I am also a relatively important person in the school now”, Hua said with a smile.
Later Hua’s student group learned from a newspaper article , “Report on the Development of Autistic Children in China” that there are about 2 million autistic children under 14 years old in China and about 10,000 autistic patients in Shanghai alone. She and fellow students wanted to help and she and her friends spent several weeks making cute school uniform bears, pens and books, organizing charity sales, and contributing 20% of their income to charities to assist this group of people. At present, they have donated more than 4,000 yuan to autistic children. Hua intends to continue to make positive changes to the world around her.
Mentors Help You Grow:
“After entering Curio, my mentor helped me come up with a detailed plan on what to focus on every week and month. This made my goals very clear. In October, at the Curio Essay Workshop, many students came together to write their personal statements and supplemental essays for 3-4 hours every day. During the workshop, I was able to finish everything I needed for my applications. Whenever I felt anxious and frustrated my mentor was always nearby to offer encouragement.”
Counselors Help You Apply Yourself:
“I came to CURIO to attend the Essay Workshop last August 2018. College counselor Natalia and my mentor answered many questions. My counselor really helped me improve my essay. The workload of essay writing for applications should not be underestimated. In total I wrote more than 1,000 words for my essay and then ended up deleting more than 800 words. I think reducing the length of your essay is more difficult than writing it. CURIO counselor helped me to improve my essay and I am very satisfied with the result.”
Fordham University has always been her Hua’s dream school, and it was also her first offer. She loves finance and she hopes that she will be as successful as her parents in the financial field.
Q：Hua Wei, what are three words you would use to describe CURIO?
Enthusiastic, warm-hearted, and reliable staff.
Watching Hua Wei grow into a confident, socially active, and dedicated student gave everyone at CURIO great pride. We are so happy that Hua Wei was able to realize her dream school and think Fordham University has acquired an amazing student.
